Protecting Yourself
From Malaria
One very common disease
that you can’t get an injection for is malaria
– which is transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical
climes. Your doctor should be able to recommend you
one of several courses of anti-malarial tablets. Though
be warned that these usually need to be taken several
days before and after as well as during your trip.
If you are going somewhere
where malaria is rife you can protect yourself against
further by following a few basic guidelines:
1. Cover your arms and
legs with suitable clothing during the evening.
2. Sleep under a mosquito net and preferably sleep in
a room with nets at the windows.
3. Burn an anti-mosquito coil in the evenings to repel
the insects – but be careful not to leave it unattended.
4. Mosquitoes breed in areas of stagnant water, so try
and avoid these.
5. Frequently spray yourself with anti-mosquito spray.
