Sun protection
Overexposure to the sun poses a serious
threat to your health, both in the short and long term.
If you do burn it can be a painful road to recovery,
messing up a few days of that precious holiday time.
In the long term too much exposure to the sun can lead
to premature ageing and even skin cancer.
To ensure you get maximum enjoyment
out of your trip we recommend you follow a few simple
precautions to help you keep fit and healthy if you
are going to a warm, sunny location (and this includes
ski resorts).
In order to enjoy the sun whilst keeping
healthy follow our guidelines:
1. Use a sun protection cream or lotion
with blocks out both UVA and UVB rays. Opt for one with
a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) – for example
a sunscreen with a SPF15 means you can stay in the sun
for 15 times longer than you would be able to without
wearing the sunscreen.
2. Keep your skin covered with loose
clothing wherever possible, but
remember, you can still burn through your clothes. Look
out for UVA- and UVB-protective clothing – especially
bathing suits – this is a particularly good idea
for children. There is a good selection available at
the larger Boots stores, Marks and Spencer and department
stores.
3. Remember that old song ‘Mad
dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun…’
? Well don’t be a typical Brit - keep out of the
midday sun, as this is when the sun is at its most harmful.
4. Make sure you reapply your sunscreen
frequently – and always reapply it after you have
been for a swim, even if it is a waterproof product.
5. Avoid drinking alcohol in the sun
as this can make you dehydrated.
6. Make sure you don't become dehydrated
by drinking plenty of fluids, especially (bottled) water.
7. Protect your head by wearing a sun
hat or a peaked cap and protect your eyes with sunglasses.
With sunglasses you get what you pay for – make
sure you choose ones with UVA- and UVB-protective lenses
rather than simply choosing ones that are purely fashion
items.
