Staying out of trouble
When you’re on holiday it’s
easy to relax and forget about your worries. As is true
of any strange place, as long as you take a few precautions
you should be able to keep out of trouble.
1. Don’t carry large amounts of
cash with you – only take out what you need and
leave the rest locked up in the hotel safe.
2. Try not to wear flash or expensive jewellery. Similarly
don’t walk around with loads of expensive gadgets
like mobile phones and digital cameras on show.
3. Avoid walking anywhere on your own or in a small
group late at night.
4. Respect the local customs. For example, if you are
in a country where it is deemed proper to cover your
shoulders, than cover yours. The more you observe local
customs, the more you will blend in which will make
you less of a target.
5. Don’t leave valuables in your hotel room leave
them in the hotel safe.
6. Try to carry notes of the smaller values around with
you, rather than pulling out hundreds whenever you buy
anything.
7. Think twice before you accept a lift from a stranger.
8. By all means be friendly with the locals –
but exercise proper caution. Be wary of telling people
where you’re staying or letting strangers come
back to your room just in case.
If you do find yourself a victim of
crime make sure you report it to the police as soon
as possible. Remember that you will need the police
report in order to proceed with an insurance claim.
